Etiquette

The J presents a highly diverse range of events from theatre productions to rock gigs. For each different event, the venue is configured to suit the style of the act.  This means that sometimes an event is ticketed as general admission, other times allocated seating and consequently  the 'venue rules' change too. So that you get the maximum enjoyment from each J performance, please read the following information on basic etiquette for each event type:

It is standard etiquette to arrive early for events using theatre seating mode.  Performances begin on the advertised start time, therefore latecomers often cause a disruption to the performance. Once the theatre doors have closed, the Duty Manager reserves the right to refuse entry to patrons unless there is an appropriate break in the performance. Cabaret style or standing room only events are much more casual - the start time isn't always strict and you're free to arrive after the performance starts.

Dress Code
Many people ask us what is The J 's dress code.  While we don't have a strict dress code, we recommend smart-casual is most appropriate.  While we encourage people to wear whatever they feel most comfortable in,  Management reserves the right to refuse entry to any person not appropriately dressed.

Smoking
Please note that The J is a smoke-free environment. Smoking is not allowed within The J, nor within 4 metres of doorways into the venue. In accordance with Queensland Government No-Smoking Legislation, smoking is also not permitted on the outside deck areas. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Photography and Video
The use of cameras, video cameras and camera mobile phones is strictly prohibited within the theatre unless approved by The J Management.  This is to protect the privacy of other patrons and comply with copyright restrictions on behalf of the artists and the venue.  On some occasions, approved photographers will be present at an event.
