Inspired by the choreographic work of Penelope Mullen's ‘Danse Noir’ which premiered in Brisbane 2014, GRAVITAS was born.
While observing Penelope rehearse the live dance work, renowned author Stephen Schofield spontaneously penned evocative words in which he described the spirit and articulation of the dancers as they traversed the space with a sense of gravitas.
And so it emerged ‘GRAVITAS’, a film featuring extraordinary dancers captured by film makers Richard Keenan and Guy Calaf. Co-Produced by Louise Howden – Smith and conceived and choreographed by Penelope Mullen.
Filmed in the crystal caves at Yanchep, WA, the film explores the reverence one feels when immersed within the grandeur of nature’s architecture.
Special ‘live’ solo dance performance by Tyrel Dulvarie (who features in GRAVITAS) and is a member of Bangarra Dance Theatre.
A young man reconciles ancient tradition with the modern, urban world in this debut feature from Stephen Page, artistic director of Australia’s renowned Bangarra Dance Theatre.
This visually arresting film may be Stephen Page’s directorial debut, but Page is no stranger to the telling of stories through movement and images.
As artistic director of the world-renowned Bangarra Dance Theatre, he has spent over twenty years interpreting the stories of Indigenous Australians for global stages.
Now Page brings Bangarra’s outstanding dance work SPEAR to the screen.
