Event Information

Disclaimer: This event is a film screening and panel discussion of the very difficult and taboo subject of incest, it is confronting and may be uncomfortable, but an important topic that can no longer be ignored. It’s a frightening thought: in Australia child sexual abuse by a family member is considered to be 70-80% of all child sexual abuse (some say as high as 90%). A staggering statistic that demands our serious attention and discussion. Silence is no longer an option.

Such a Resounding Silence, French Documentary Screening & Panel Discussion

MC: Sam Coward

Special Guest Speaker: David Williamson

At the heart of the evening is a screening of the internationally acclaimed French documentary ‘Such A Resounding Silence’ — a raw, beautifully produced and deeply moving exploration of intrafamilial childhood sexual abuse (incest) told through the lived experience of incest survivors. Through intimate interviews, symbolic animation, captivating photography, and evocative music, the film sensitively portrays their stories, showcasing their incredible resilience and courage. Despite its challenging subject matter, this documentary offers hope, empowerment and healing. With this documentary actor/producer Emmanuelle Béart wishes to the lift the veil on incest along with the ‘No Laughing Matter’ podcast series Producer/Founder Tanya Lee OAM aim to educate and create more awareness of the magnitude and scale of this silent epidemic.Following the film, a high-profile panel discussion will explore what Australia must do next — not only to support survivors, but to begin addressing incest at the source: with prevention, education, and systemic change.
