Event Information

From phishing scams and AI-generated misinformation to the everyday language we use online—how secure are we really in the digital age?

Join renowned linguist and communicator Professor Roly Sussex for a thought-provoking talk on the hidden vulnerabilities of our digital world.

Drawing from decades of experience in linguistics and communication, Roly will unpack how language plays a crucial role in digital deception, cybersecurity awareness, and the way we navigate information online.

Expect insights, stories, and real-world examples that will leave you questioning how well we truly understand the risks in our increasingly connected lives.

Roly Sussex is an Australian linguist. He is the Emeritus Professor of Applied Language Studies at the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies of the University of Queensland in Brisbane.

Sussex hosts a talk back program on language and linguistics on ABC Radio in Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory and writes a weekly column, “word limit”, for The Courier-Mail. Sussex will appear at The J for one night only to discuss how vulnerable is our digital world.

At the conclusion of Roly’s presentation, he will open up the floor for questions from the audience.
